CMA Medical Student Leadership Conference: Sustaining the Dialogue

Dear California Medical Students,

Thanks to the many of you who attended the California Medical Association’s 4th Annual Medical Student Leadership Conference. Over 100 medical students from across the state gathered at the University of Southern California on September 19, 2009, to discuss health care reform. Students were passionate about the issues of the day, including obtaining the Governor’s signature on AB 2 to stop retroactive rescission of health insurance coverage, improving medical school loan repayment options, the primary care shortage, access to care, and more. The voice of medical students was heard by influential policy makers in the governor’s office, the legislature and within CMA and AMA.

We look forward to many exciting opportunities in the weeks to come. On October 16-18, CMA will have its annual House of Delegates meeting in Anaheim, at which medical students are welcome and encouraged to attend. This year there should be very interesting debates on some of the issues brought up at the leadership conference. We as California medical students have put together a Health Care Reform Task Force, which will gather ideas from around the state on health care reform and issue a press release after the Anaheim meeting. Also, November 6-8 is the AMA Interim meeting in Houston. We hope to see many of you at all of these events.

We appreciate your willingness to provide critical perspectives on how to enhance our health care delivery system. To find out more about how you can get involved, please see the links below for more information about CMA MSS leadership positions, CALPAC membership, and student clinic resources.

CMA is committed to advocating on behalf of its 35,000 members, many of whom are medical students. I greatly appreciate your engagement at this year’s leadership conference and look forward to sustaining our dialogue on health care reform. Thank you for your continued commitment to the profession and our future patients. Please feel free to contact me at any time with questions, comments, or ideas.

Sincerely,

Jackie Weiss
