As the use of technology becomes an integral part of the provision of health care, physicians are embracing the use of telemedicine and telehealth in their practices. Telehealth has the potential to improve access to care, reduce costs and facilitate physician communication with their patients. The rapidly evolving technology, however, also raises issues related to reimbursement, appropriate uses of telehealth and telemedicine, patient consent, security and confidentiality. The following document discusses telemedicine generally and the major issues physicians face when employing telemedicine or telehealth in their practice.
