Criminal prosecutions against physicians and particularly those against Dr. Wolfgang Schug, a rural emergency department physician, and Bruce Steir, a former physician who performed second-trimester abortions, alarm physicians. See discussion of those cases below. The threat of a malpractice suit is chilling enough; the specter of a jail sentence is unimaginable. However, increasingly, physicians may find themselves under much greater scrutiny in the wake of state or national crises, such as the current growing opioid epidemic under which prosecutors have begun to seek out and prosecute health care practitioners.
