Quality Issues
The Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR) was established by law in December 1989. AHCPR, a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is the lead agency charged with supporting research designed to improve the quality of health care, reduce its cost, and broaden access to essential services. AHCPR's broad programs of research bring practical, science-based information to medical practitioners, and to consumers and other health care purchasers. AHCPR also manages the National Guideline Clearinghouse (sponsored jointly with AMA and the American Association of Health Plans) on its Web site, making clinical guidelines that meet strict development criteria widely available. http://www.ahcpr.gov
CALINX (California Information Exchange Linking Partners for Quality Healthcare) began in late 1996 as a broadly-based effort among California businesses, physicians, health plans, hospitals and health care systems. All stakeholders have agreed to collaborate on standards, co-operate on implementation and compete on quality. http://www.calinx.org
An independent non-profit organization for information about the quality of the nation's managed care plans. http://www.ncqa.org
