Need Help with EHR Implementation?

CMA is a founding partner of the California Health Information Partnerships and Services Organization (CalHIPSO), which recently received a $31 million grant to provide education, outreach and technical assistance to help primary care providers select, implement and meaningfully use certified electronic health records. For more information, visit the CalHIPSO website.

The CMA health information technology (HIT) resource center provides physicians with the tools and information they need as they are considering whether or not to implement an electronic health record (EHR), and if so, which system to choose.

The 2009 federal economic stimulus package provides funding to promote the adoption of HIT, the vast majority of which will be directed to physicians to subsidize the purchase and usage of EHR systems. Beginning in 2011, qualifying Medicare providers stand to receive up to $44,000 under the program and qualifying Medi-Cal providers stand to receive as much as $65,000. To receive these payments, physicians must not only implement an EHR, but must demonstrate "meaningful use" of their EHR. Practices and groups that have already purchased EHR systems can also qualify for funds as long as they achieve "meaningful use."

Physicians are being asked to navigate a sometimes confusing world of conflicting information from vendors, federal regulations and technical jargon. The CMA HIT resource center provides reliable, unbiased information and will provide a roadmap that will help you learn more about the opportunities and challenges for physicians in HIT. This resource includes summaries and analyses of important regulations, hands-on tools for CMA members, helpful links, and information about CMA’s advocacy efforts around HIT. This HIT resource center will provide member physicians with a one-stop shop for reliable information and tools to understand the issues, make informed decisions, and be successful in their adoption of technology.

CMA is closely monitoring the regulations, legislation and HIT marketplace and will be providing regular updates as new information becomes available.
